Saint Francis Xavier began his most important life's work when he began his missionary travels in 1541. His first major stop was in Goa on the west coast of India. This was a major Portuguese center. He began to teach the faith to the Portuguese who had wandered from the teachings of the Church and then he began converting the local population. It is said he converted 10,000 during his time in Goa.
He continued his work and traveled to the far east including Japan where he continued to introduce Christianity to the local people. His final trip was to China. Saint Francis wanted to bring Christianity to China. He never got to accomplish this because he died during the trip. Saint Francis died on December 3, 1552 at the age of 46 on a island off the coast of China, His remains were evetually brought back to Goa where they are to this day,
