The official process for declaring someone a saint is called canonization. Early in the Churches history there was not a formal process for becoming a saint but that had changed during the time of Saint Francis Xavier. By that time there was a process and part of that process was to investigate the miracles that were performed by the person being considered for canonization.
Saint Francis Xavier traveled to many different places on his missions and it was during those missions that he was credited with his miracles. He is credited with a number of resurrections. On the Fishery Coast when he was about to begin Mass in a small church at Coimbatur, a crowd entered with the corpse of a boy who had been drowned in a well. The mother threw herself at the feet of St. Francis, who was also the one who had baptized this child. Francis said a short prayer, took the dead child by the hand, and bade him arise. The child rose and immediately ran to his mother. There were other resurrections and he also a great storm at sea subside and saved the ship from sinking.
