Saint Francis Xavier has many nicknames and accomplished so many great things in his life. I think Saint Francis most famous part of his legacy is his membership in the Society of Jesus. As a founding member of that group that we now call the Jesuits he helped launch a group that is such a big part of Catholic education and teaching. The Jesuits run some of the most famous and respected schools in this country. Here in Boston the most famous would be Boston College and there are others: College of the Holy Cross, Loyola University, Georgetown University, Fordham, and of course Xavier University.
His missionary work must have been his most important legacy though. He dedicated his life to it and was responsible for converting thousands of people to Christianity in India, Japan and Indochina. Some say he converted 30,000 people to Christianity and some put the number much higher. He was considered the greatest missionary since Saint Paul and it is believed that he converted more people than any other missionary.
